Thanks Kevin. I think routines help almost anything, but as you point out, we all need to be flexible and let the routines be guides and not rules. Although a guide masquerading as a rule can be useful when "negotiating" with four year olds.

Dear Cosmic Dad, This is a great post. Our kids are in high school and university now, but I remember being in the same boat as you. I would try to make dinner as soon after school as I could, or use a slow cooker, so we could eat sooner. Supper at 4pm was a good routine for a few years. But as they grew older they often had after school activities until 5pm, which pushed dinner back, sometimes by a couple hours. I think children's routines are the most important part of parenting. Keep up the good work, Dad.

Cheers, Kevin

As you're very well aware with your experiences as a member of the media and as the source for the media, it's all about getting eyeballs and it's so much easier to grab them when you don't stay accountable to the source of the story.
We are in an usual situation in which we "choose" for dh to be a SAM. However my income was not more than my dh. We essentially lost 50% of our income. What my question for people out there with SAM, how to deal with the economic issues.
For example many moms "choose" to stay at home, but they lose power in the household. While dads who "choose" to stay at home, maintain their "power" in the household. This is from my personal experience and observation, from knowing the dads who are SAD's... Comment?

"Apparently, her sense of empathy will be fully engaged by the age of seven and she’ll then understand why I’m banging my head against the wall."
I like to encourage my children's sense of empathy by asking things like:
"Do you think Mommy likes wiping your pee off the floor?"
and
"How would you feel if your brother had his foot on your face?"
Ironically, it's had the unfortunate consequence that my five year old asks questions like:
"How would you feel if I was brushing your teeth?"
and
"Do you think I like wiping my pee off the floor?"
Wonderful advice - I'm stealing your suggestion to ask them both for solutions - and, to keep it simple.

Isn't this a case of the parent should use their head? If my albino child was going on a field trip, shouldn't I lather them up with zinc cream, or using my brain, not let them go. Stay at home with them. I don't see that it is the school's job to make sure our kids have sunscreen on. It is ours. If my kids have peanut allergies, don't go to the zoo where someone might be feeding the elephants... Just sayin'. J.
